Soho is not a neighbourhood so much as a state of mind. It's been a red light district, a jazz quarter, a Bohemian enclave, an epicentre of alternative culture, a Cantonese kitchen, and a creative industry hub, sometimes all at once, sometimes all on the same street. It has eaten homogenisation for breakfast and spat out any concept trying to trade on Soho's unique values. It is, stubbornly and magnificently, still itself.
The Queens Head has been here since 1736. We've been the custodians since 2011. The world has changed so much since then but at every stage, we've stayed true to the spirit that drives this distinct part of London.
Denman Street sits at the hinge point between the chaos of Piccadilly Circus and the more interesting chaos of Soho proper. Two minutes from the tube, a short stumble from the Piccadilly Theatre, the Criterion, and the Shaftesbury, and a world away from the tourist pubs that line the main drag. If you know, you know. And if you don't know yet, you're about to find out.
Pull up a stool and become part of the Soho story.
Most pubs in central London are tied venues: owned or leased through a brewery or pub company, which dictates what they stock, what they charge, and how they operate. Walk into enough of them and you'll notice a certain sameness, the same fonts, the same keg lines, the same laminated menus.
The Queens Head is a free house. No brewery telling us what to pour, no corporate mandate to hit a product mix, no obligation to stock anything we wouldn't drink ourselves. It's an increasingly rare thing in W1, the freedom to choose real ales from independent brewers, to rotate the guest lines based on what's good right now, and to run a pub the way a pub is supposed to be run.
Stock good beer. Look after your customers. Don't answer to anyone but the people walking through the door.
